    Stump Grinding & Removal

Reclaim Your Lawn. Eliminate the Stump for Good.

Trip hazards, regrowth, lawn mower obstacles, and yard eyesores — all solved in one visit. We grind to below grade so you can sod, plant, or pave over the spot.

    • Below-grade grinding (6–10 inches)
    • Surface roots & root flare included
    • Chips left or hauled — your choice
    • Bundle with tree removal & save
    • All stump sizes & species
    • No chemicals

After a tree removal, the stump is often what's left causing ongoing problems. Regrowth sprouts keep returning. The lawn mower navigates around it for years. Children trip on it. The root system continues to decay underground, creating settling voids. Grinding the stump below grade eliminates all of this — cleanly, quickly, and permanently.

    How Stump Grinding Works

A stump grinder uses a rotating cutting wheel with hardened teeth to chip the stump wood down below the soil surface — typically 6 to 10 inches below grade, or deeper if replanting over the spot. The result is a ground-level pile of wood chips and soil that can be raked level and seeded immediately. No chemicals. No excavation. No waiting months for the stump to rot on its own.

What Happens to the Wood Chips?

The grinding process produces a mix of wood chips and soil. We can leave this material in place as a natural mulch layer (ideal for garden beds or areas you plan to replant), or we can haul everything away and leave clean soil ready for grass seed. The choice is yours — and we'll confirm during the estimate.

Root Flare and Surface Root Grinding

Large stumps often have surface roots that extend several feet from the base and create their own mowing hazards. We grind visible surface roots and the root flare at the stump base as part of the service, eliminating the tripping hazards closest to the stump. Deep root removal below grade is a separate excavation service for cases where root voids are causing structural concerns (foundation proximity, sewer line conflict, etc.).

    Same-Day Service with Tree Removal

Most clients prefer to bundle stump grinding with tree removal in a single visit. This is the most cost-effective approach — the equipment is already on-site, and the crew is already briefed on the job. If you had a tree removed previously and the stump has been sitting, we also service standalone stump grinding jobs across Muscatine County.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Will the tree grow back if I grind the stump?

No. Grinding removes the cambium layer that drives regrowth. Unlike cutting a tree at ground level (which leaves regrowth potential), grinding destroys the stump tissue that could otherwise sprout. Some species like cottonwood and silver maple may produce root sprouts from lateral roots, but the stump itself will not regenerate.

How deep do you grind the stump?

Standard grinding depth is 6–10 inches below grade, which is sufficient for overseeding or laying sod. If you're planning to plant a new tree or install a hardscape feature over the spot, let us know and we'll grind deeper to allow for root replacement.

Can you grind a stump near my foundation or utilities?

Yes, with care. We'll call Iowa One Call (Iowa's 811 utility locate service) before any grinding in areas with underground utility concern. For stumps within 5 feet of a foundation, we adjust the grinding approach to avoid vibration transfer. We'll assess this during the free estimate.
