Iowa averages more derecho events than nearly any state in the country. The August 2020 derecho — the most destructive thunderstorm complex in U.S. recorded history — damaged or destroyed an estimated 7 million trees across Iowa in a single night. Freers & Sons was deployed within hours. We've seen every major storm this region has faced since 1935. We know what rapid, safe response looks like.
What We Handle in Emergency Response
Fallen trees on structures, vehicles, and driveways. Hanging or 'widow-maker' limbs suspended in the canopy, ready to fall. Trees pushed into powerlines — we work in coordination with MidAmerican Energy and Alliant Energy protocols to safely clear trees once power is confirmed isolated. Large-scale storm clearing on commercial, municipal, and multi-property situations. Ice-storm damage — split crowns, bent leaders, trunk failures from accumulated ice weight.
The 2020 Derecho — What We Learned
The August 10, 2020 derecho generated straight-line winds exceeding 100 mph across the Cedar Rapids to Muscatine corridor, toppling trees that had stood for over a century. The lesson that event reinforced: response speed matters, but so does response precision. Fallen trees on occupied structures require methodical, crane-assisted extraction — not chainsaw urgency that ignores structural risk. We dispatched crews across Muscatine County for three weeks post-storm. We'll do it again.
Documentation for Insurance Claims
We provide written documentation of the damage and the work performed — photos, descriptions, and crew notes — in a format suitable for homeowner insurance claims. If your insurer requires a certified arborist assessment, let us know during your call and we'll ensure the documentation is complete.
Preparation Before the Storm
The best emergency response is the one you don't need. Annual pruning to remove deadwood and reduce wind-load in the canopy, cabling of structurally weak co-dominant stems, and removal of declining ash trees before they become post-storm hazards all reduce your property's storm vulnerability significantly. We offer pre-storm risk assessments — call us in spring before Iowa's severe weather season peaks.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do you charge extra for emergency calls?
We do not add a standard emergency surcharge. Pricing reflects the work required — scope, access, equipment needed, and hours. We'll give you an honest estimate before work begins so there are no surprises.
A tree is on my roof right now — what do I do?
Call (563) 263-2155 immediately. While you wait: do not go under the tree or onto the roof. If the tree has compromised the roof structure, leave the house until a contractor has assessed structural safety. We'll respond as fast as equipment and safe travel allow.
Can you work near powerlines?
We work in proximity to powerlines following established utility clearance protocols. In most cases, the power must be confirmed isolated by the utility provider before we can safely work. We coordinate with MidAmerican Energy and Alliant Energy and will guide you through the process. Do not attempt to work near a downed or energized line yourself.
